Service Animals
A service animal is defined as a dog specifically trained to perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. Examples include guiding visually impaired individuals or alerting those who are deaf. The tasks must be directly related to the person’s disability. Animals providing only comfort or emotional support are not considered service animals under the ADA.
Access: Service animals are generally allowed in all public areas of the venue.
Identification: Staff may ask two questions to verify if an animal is a service animal, unless the service is obvious: 1) Is the animal required due to a disability? 2) What task has the animal been trained to perform?
Control: The animal must be under the handler’s control, typically with a leash or harness, unless this interferes with its work or the handler’s disability.
Behavior: Service animals should be housebroken and well-behaved; disruptive behavior may lead to removal.
Responsibility: The handler is responsible for the animal’s care, including cleanup.
Fees: No extra fees are charged for service animals, but handlers may be liable for damages caused by the animal.
Exclusion of Service Animals: An animal may be excluded if it is out of control and the handler doesn’t correct the behavior, is not housebroken, or poses a direct safety threat. If a service animal is excluded for legitimate reasons, the individual with a disability will be offered the opportunity to participate without the service animal.
